The Single Subject Matter Preparation Program in Spanish

Course requirements for the Single Subject Matter Preparation Program, 37-53 units, in conjunction with the Professional Education Program, lead to a Single Subject Teaching Credential.

In most majors, candidates for this credential will normally fulfill the single subject matter preparation program by completing the appropriate education option in the major. Any exceptions to this procedure are noted at the end of this section. In addition to the single subject matter preparation program, completion of an additional professional education program is required to qualify for a California teaching credential. Professional education (credential) programs are available through the School of Education. Your departmental credential advisor is responsible for verifying that the subject matter preparation program has been completed. If you are interested in obtaining a teaching credential, confer with the appropriate credential advisor early in your University career. Department credential advisors can assist you in planning an educational program that meets both major and credential requirements.

Subject matter preparation requirements are governed by state legislative action and approval of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Requirements may change between catalogs. Please consult with your departmental credential advisor for current information.

The Single Subject Matter Preparation Program described below, along with a professional education program, meets all requirements for the Spanish teaching major in Spanish.

Language Competence Prerequisite: 0-16 units

A survey of the fields of general linguistics. Theory and practice of language analysis. Relationship between language and culture. Principles of phonology, morphology, and syntax of Spanish language. 3 hours discussion. (009142)

Phonology (phonetics and phonemics), linguistic geography, and related areas as they apply to the learning and teaching of Spanish. 3 hours discussion. (009150)

Introduction to the historical and cultural heritage of Spain, to selected figures in the arts and public life, and to the ways and traditions of Spaniards today. Readings, reports, and discussion. 3 hours discussion. (009152)

A survey of the cultural, social, economic, and political heritage of Latin America and its evolution into contemporary Latin American society. 3 hours discussion. (009155)
Prerequisites: SPAN 301.
Introduces students to the study of Hispanic literature and culture, and develops their skills in language comprehension and analysis of prose, poetry, and drama. The works studied will be short stories, full-length plays, and Hispanic-American narrative and lyric poetry. SPAN 341 and SPAN 342 are required of all majors and count as electives for the minor. Either fulfills the prerequisite for all other upper-division literature courses. 3 hours discussion. (009140)
Prerequisites: SPAN 301.
Introduces students to the study of Hispanic literature and culture, and develops their skills in language comprehension and analysis of prose, poetry, and drama. Works studied will be the novel, one-act plays, and Peninsular Spanish narrative and lyric poetry. SPAN 342 is required of all majors and fulfills the prerequisite for all other upper-division literature courses. 3 hours discussion. (009141)
Prerequisites: SPAN 301, SPAN 320.
This is a senior-level Spanish course that introduces students to current theories of foreign language learning and implications of key research for classroom practice. Students learn strategies for teaching Spanish, including the utilization of appropriate technology. In addition to lecture and discussion, students complete the Early Field Experience hours required for entry to a credential program. 2 hours lecture, 3 hours clinical. (020141)
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Written Communication (A2) requirement; upper-division standing.
To be taken concurrently with any upper-division Spanish course. The course includes two components, the Spanish Subject Matter Assessment Exam and the Writing Proficiency Research Paper. The comprehensive exam covers Spanish language, Spanish linguistics, and Spanish and Latin American literature and culture. The Writing Proficiency Research Paper is an investigative/analytical essay in English on a major work of Hispanic literature. Students show mastery of the major areas of study in Spanish as well as the ability to investigate, plan and write essays using correct English and in a style suitable to literary analysis. 1 hour discussion. This is an approved Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement course; a grade of C- or higher certifies writing proficiency for majors. (009156)

SPAN 497 should be taken during the senior year and concurrently with any other upper-division Spanish (SPAN) course.

The study of at least four semesters of another foreign language is recommended, but not required.

Criteria for Assessment of Subject Matter Competence

To receive department recommendation for the Single Subject Matter Preparation Program, a student must have a minimum 3.0 average in upper-division course work. GPA will be calculated on the upper-division courses which are required for the Spanish major.

Procedure for Assessment of Subject Matter Competence

If the minimum criteria listed above are met, the student's records will be circulated among all Spanish faculty for comment.

After evaluating the faculty recommendations, the Teacher Education Committee will determine the subject matter competence and teaching potential for entering the Professional Education Program.

State of California foreign language requirements for high school graduates make it necessary that we closely review candidates. Therefore, determination of subject matter competence may entail an interview in the target language.

Candidates are urged to submit their records for subject matter assessment to the Department of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures well in advance of the Department of Education's deadline for applications to the Professional Education Program.
