About the Catalog Cover
Today’s Chico State students may seem more diverse than ever, yet there is one thing many have in common with 52 percent identifying as first generation. These students are here to reach a dream that their parents have yet to achieve—complete a four-year degree.
As they share their stories about navigating the complexities of an unfamiliar environment, student services—from the 50-year-old Educational Opportunity Program to new programs such as the Student Transition and Retention Center—are credited for helping first gens overcome barriers. Participation in TRIO programs and other campus resources aimed at supporting students from traditionally underserved populations also contribute to their success.
Learning about how their identities and backgrounds can influence their Chico State experience allows the University to empower all students. As the University focuses on equity and narrowing achievement gaps, the stories of first-generation students are worth sharing.
