Topics include the evolution of the language from Latin to modern French, as well as historical and contemporary states of the language as they relate to phonology, morphology, and semantics. This course allows students the opportunity to bring together a body of knowledge in French and to solidity it by analyzing and drawing conclusions from a variety written in French and to write arguments about them in English of sources Writing essays in English for different sorts of potential audiences. Students have ample opportunity to progress towards professional level writing so that students demonstrate writing proficiency in English about French. 3 hours discussion. This is an approved Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement course; a grade of C- or higher certifies writing proficiency for majors. This is an approved Writing Course.

Intensive study of scholarly approaches to problems in French language, literature or culture and training in the use of secondary sources to back up original ideas, leading to the production and public presentation of a scholarly project involving substantial research and earning a grade of B or higher for the designation of Honors in the Major.
