Student Health Center

The Student Health Center is an out-patient clinic staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who provide medical care to students enrolled in the University in accord with policies set by the Board of Trustees of the California State University. Services include preventive care, primary care, and health education.

During the academic year, the Student Health Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The following services are available:

Acute Care Clinic

The acute care area of the Student Health Center functions as a walk-in clinic. It is designed to accommodate students who need to be seen for urgent or acute problems.

Appointments

Appointments are available for those who desire an appointment and for those who require diagnostic or consultative services beyond those available in the Acute Care Clinic. Appointments may be made online, by telephone, or in person. Self check-in kiosks are available.

Preventative Services

Comprehensive health exams, contraception, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted illness, pregnancy testing and counseling, and annual gynecological examinations.

Laboratory and X-ray

Laboratory and x-ray examinations complement the out-patient clinic service. The majority of tests ordered by Student Health Service personnel are provided without charge. However, some specialized tests cannot be supported by the Student Health Service, and the cost of these tests is the student's responsibility.

Pharmacy

Prescribed medications may be obtained at the Student Health Center. Prescriptions from outside physicians can be filled if the medication is stocked by the pharmacy. Some nonprescription health care items are also available. Pharmaceutical items are not included in the basic services and are charged to the student at an equal or lower cost than retail pharmacies.

Immunization

The following immunizations are available: Hepatitis B, flu shots, meningitis, MMR (measles/mumps/rubella), Gardasil, and tetanus. Travel vaccination and education are available. Allergy immunotherapy shots are administered to students who provide their own antigen and appropriate documentation.

Health Insurance

Services at the Student Health Center entitles students to prepaid access to healthcare services provided at either no cost or low cost ONLY during the hours and days that the health center is open. When the health center is closed and there is a medical emergency, it is strongly recommended for students to have health insurance coverage. An optional student health insurance is available for purchase by enrolled students.  Information may be found at the SHC website or a printed brochure may be picked up at the health center or the Associated Students Office.

Health Education Programs

Students seeking health education consultation or materials regarding various health-related topics such as contraception options, smoking cessation, alcohol and other drugs, are encouraged to make an appointment with a Student Health Center staff member. There is also health education literature available in the lobby.

Health Service Fee

Funding for the Student Health Center, at least in part, comes from a mandatory health service fee which students pay as part of their registration fees.

This fee enables the Student Health Center to provide the above services at no cost, or low cost, to students.

Student Health Advisory Council

The Student Health Advisory Council serves in an advisory capacity to the Student Health Center. This council, consisting of students and faculty, meets regularly throughout the academic year.

Summer Care

Students who were enrolled in the spring semester and plan to return in the fall are eligible for service during the summer months. A nominal fee is charged for each summer visit.

Emergencies

The on-campus emergency number is "9-1-1."
Use this number on campus only for emergency, fire, police, or medical aid reporting.

This number will initiate emergency services ALWAYS. This number only may to the University Police Department.

Use "9-1-1" from off-campus phones. The non-emergency number for University Police is 530-898-5555. This number ALWAYS goes directly to University Police .

Community Medical Assistance

The Student Health Center meets most students' primary outpatient medical needs. However, if the health care needed is beyond the scope of the Student Health Center or when the clinic is closed, there are several local after-hour clinics with extended hours and a hospital within blocks of the campus.
