This course is designed to provide all students with a philosophical and practical basis for understanding the diversity and power of visual pop-culture, especially through the phenomenon of Japanese comics (magna). PPT lectures, discussions, readings, films, and creating and writing exercises focus upon visual thinking strategy as a communicative tool. The final goal of this course is to help students (from beginners to those with advanced knowledge) understand the role and value of Japanese pop-culture that influences youth minds and society worldwide in the 21st century. 2 hours lecture, 2 hours activity. Art Teaching Internship

This course is an internship offered for 1.0-3.0 units. Interns engage in hands-on teaching experiences and designing art lessons in collaboration with instructor and other interns. Students meet weekly to teach different art lessons to groups of 10 to 15 kids ranging in age from 5 to 17. Lessons are designed around the current Turner Print Museum exhibitions, which change 2 to 3 times per semester. You must register directly with a supervising faculty member. You may take this course more than once for a maximum of 15.0 units. Credit/no credit grading.

This course provides students with a theoretical and practical basis for learning historical and contemporary issues in art education. Topics may include: 1) diversity in visual cultures and 2) universality vs. cultural-specificity of children's artistic and aesthetic development. 2 hours discussion, 2 hours activity. You may take this course more than once for a maximum of 6.0 units.
