In-depth theoretical approaches and research perspectives are studied from the field of organizational communication. Theories studied include classical to modern theories of organization, as well as contemporary and critical theories in the communication field. Research areas reviewed include network analysis, socialization, control practices, and others. Application of theory into research is also explored. 3 hours lecture. (002030)
Provides knowledge and skills to administer health organizations and programs. Concepts of planning, organizational behavior, and management applicable to the administration of health organizations and programs are addressed. Major approaches to management, motivation, leadership, decision making, supervision, and budgeting are presented. 3 hours seminar. This is an approved Writing Course. Formerly HCSV 330. (001582)
Using a combination of theory and application, this course focuses on the human side of organizations, including issues of 1) making good decisions, 2) enhancing performance, 3) steering through a turbulent global environment, 4) combining and unifying multiple business functions and 5) enabling change. Students gain an understanding of management and how and why organizations are structured. The themes of quality, technology, ethics, and adaptation are emphasized. 3 hours lecture. (005704)

An intensive examination of the theory and research on organizational design, with an emphasis on applications of the theories. Focus is on how organizations develop structures to meet various internal (e.g., size, technology) and external (e.g., stakeholders, uncertainty) demands. 3 hours lecture. (007597)

This course represents an advanced exploration and application of leadership and associated decision making with particular focus on communication processes in a variety of contexts. Discussion topics include, but are not limited to, traditional and contemporary leadership theory, leadership communication competence, leadership and dissent, gender and cultural issues associated with leadership and decision making, followers as an integral part of the leadership equation, and ethical issues related to leadership communication. A group project offers students the opportunity to witness first-hand concepts discussed and to apply what they have learned. 3 hours lecture. This course engages each student in the ongoing discussion and exploration of the requisites for effective leadership. We will do this by exposing the class to theories of leadership, the literature on the practical experiences of leaders and leadership, and consideration of personal attributes for effective leadership. This capstone experience is designed to bring together the various elements of the minor in leadership studies. It is also structured to introduce the student of leadership to emerging areas which impact significantly the study of leadership. These topics include ethics and integrity, the transpersonal dimension, creativity and innovation, team building, and the impact and use of technology. The course also requires the student to solve leadership-related problems individually and as a member of a team. 3 hours seminar. (009600)
Prerequisite: MGMT 303.
The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of leadership and motivation in organizations. This course explores contemporary leadership thought, including approaches to leadership development, leadership models, leadership in specific contexts, and the relationships between leadership and organizational power, authority, and management. We also investigate the connection between leadership and motivation, motivation theories, and motivational programs for complex organizations. 3 hours lecture. (005729)
